Jowie Files Notice of Appeal Against Death Sentence for Monica Kimani Murder
Joseph Kuria Irungu, popularly known as Jowie, has taken a significant legal step following his recent conviction and sentencing for the 2018 murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani. He has officially filed a notice of appeal against the court’s decision.
Prepared by his legal representative, Andrew Muge, the notice specifies Jowie’s intention to appeal the verdict delivered by Justice Grace Nzioka, which found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to death on March 13, 2024.
Monica Kimani tragically lost her life in her Nairobi home at Lamuria Gardens in Kilimani on September 19, 2018. The prosecution presented compelling evidence during the trial, convincing the court beyond a reasonable doubt of Jowie’s involvement in her murder.
In her ruling, Justice Nzioka stated that Jowie Irungu would face the penalty of death as stipulated by Section 204 of the Penal Code of Kenya for the offense of murder. The judge outlined the limited sentencing options available, which included a term of years, life imprisonment, or the death penalty.
According to Kenyan law, individuals found guilty of intentionally causing the death of another person with malice aforethought are charged with the crime of murder.
Jowie’s decision to appeal underscores the complexity of the legal proceedings surrounding this high-profile case.
